Join New Hanover County’s Office of Diversity & Equity and Cape Fear Museum of History and Science for the launch of Dr. Bertha Boykin Todd’s book, Reflections on a Massacre and a Coup. The event is FREE.
Dr. Todd came to Wilmington to serve as the all-Black Williston Senior High School’s librarian in the 1950s. She helped usher the school system through the turbulent years of desegregation and has been a leader in the community’s work to acknowledge the history of the 1898 massacre and coup. Reflections on a Massacre and a Coup recounts how the community created a coalition who worked for decades to make sure that this history was explored, and to build the 1898 memorial. Learn how the work continues!
Books are $40 each and will be available for purchase. Dr. Todd will sign copies from 2 to 4 pm. This event will feature a short program starting at 2:45 pm, with remarks from Dr. Bertha Todd and the host organizations. A selection of artifacts including the Museum’s copies of The Daily Record will also be on view. Light refreshments will be served.
